Mastering JSON diffs and technical Markdown: debug API drift and write docs offline
When an API response changes unexpectedly, a plain text diff is noisy: keys move, timestamps change on every call and arrays come back in a different order. The JSON Compare tool compares structure instead of lines, and everything stays on your device.
Remove the noise first
- Ignore keys such as updatedAt, requestId or etag. They are skipped wherever they appear.
- Ignore array order when a list of tags or IDs is a set, not a sequence.
- Number tolerance treats 0.30000000000000004 and 0.3 as equal.
- Ignore case and trim whitespace help when comparing hand-edited data.
Read the result your way
The list view groups added, removed and changed paths. Side by side shows before and after values in two columns. Filter by change type or search a path to focus on one area. The similarity score gives a quick sense of how far two documents drifted.
Export a JSON Patch
The JSON Patch tab produces RFC 6902 operations (replace, remove, add) that turn the original into the modified document. Download it for a test fixture, or export a Markdown report to paste into a pull request.
Document the change
Open the Markdown Live Editor, paste the report and explain the change. Use split, editor or preview layouts, keep scroll in sync, and jump between sections from the outline bar.
- Copy formatted pastes clean headings and tables into Docs, Word or email.
- Print / PDF opens a clean print view; choose Save as PDF.
- Export .html creates a standalone page with styles included.
Tips
Run Sort keys before comparing so both inputs read in the same order. For very large files (tens of megabytes), compare one section at a time to keep the tab responsive.
