Does it support the old .doc format?

Only the modern .docx format is supported — resave legacy .doc files as .docx in Word first.

Why does the layout differ from Word?

Text and structure are preserved, but exact Word page layout, fonts and floating objects are approximated by the browser.

How do I save as PDF?

Click Save as PDF and pick "Save as PDF" as the destination, or use Print to send it to a printer.
